The redevelopment of East Austin was led by the Mueller Development in 1999. This project turned the area into a mixed-use urban village in the heart of Austin. This incorporated single and multi-family residences, 140 acres of parkland, Dell Children’s Hospital and retail.

From this project, development spread throughout other areas and by 2013 East Austin ranked number 7 on Forbes’ list of America’s Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods. It touts some of the newest, most highly rated restaurants (Franklin Barbecue), a multitude of art galleries, coffee shops, food trucks and farmer’s markets. With many community driven initiatives, the focus on development in East Austin has been striking a balance between preserving the history and authenticity of the area while creating new business and housing opportunities for the growing population. Students in East Austin attend schools in the Austin, Manor or Del Valle ISDs.
